A minangkabau community has a matriarchal system and because of that the woman is the important person in the family.  Therefore the man marries into the female's family and moves into her family house.

It is in fact close to the natural order of things because it is the woman who raises the kids and they are influenced mostly by their mother. Because of this natural tendency one sees this happen in the patriarchal system as well. The parents often feel more at ease with the kids of their daughter.

That is not always the case, but it does make sense because the mother raises her kids similar to the way she was raised and so creates an atmosphere she was used to when she grew up.

And therefore the kids may also feel themselves more attracted to the grandparents of their mother's side.  Again this does not always have to be this way. I am only talking in a general way of things.

We now come to the ceremony where the bride pays respect to her husband and then bride and groom pay respect to their
respective parents and to the grandparents if present:

Due to download problems some of my friends are complaining about
only the above pictures are shown on this page, with more to follow.
The lowest picture is where Didi shows respect to my Dad and Auntie Lien,
my Mom had already passed away when Tom and Didi got married.

The ceremony in fact started with Didi showing respect to Tom, and then together they went to all of us, starting with Didi's parents.
